Philippe BAUDELOCQUE was born in 1974 in Yerres (France), where he lives and works.

He graduated from the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris in 2002.

In parallel to his studio work, he multiplies his interventions in the public space from Paris to Hong Kong, through Japan, Azerbaijan or Kenya. His work has been exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo, at the Drawing Now contemporary drawing fair, at the Museum of Modern Art MACRO (Rome) or in the Taizo in temple in Kyoto. He has been included in the collections of the Orleans Museum of Natural History and the Centre Pompidou. He has also collaborated with institutions such as the Centre des Monuments Nationaux and companies such as Diptyque, Agnès b., Hermès and Pierre HERMÉ.

From a first artistic experience in the graffiti scene of the late 80’s, Philippe keeps the energy and the monumentality of the supports that he invests with a modest medium, the chalk, in a drawing practice.

The artist develops a graphic universe with abundant motifs drawing his inspiration as much from the primitive arts as from scientific imagery. If the project is sketched in advance in a research notebook, the motifs are improvised freehand in the moment of manufacture. The graphic alchemy lies in the articulation between the preciousness of the technique, the crumbly character of the chalk, the meticulousness of the gesture, the excessiveness of the production and the support.

Comparable to the cells of a living organism, the representations are enriched by duplication and multiplication of motifs, alternating animal or landscape figures, abstract or symbolic representations. Interested as much in quantum physics, mathematics, rhythms as well as the laws of nature, Philippe develops a posture of laboratory around incubated and viral graphic forms, recycling an iconography as learned as allegorical and leads us from the galactic imagery to the molecular representation.”
